Stephen Graham1

(circa 1774 - 25 December 1856)
FatherAndrew Graham (cir. Apr 1736 - cir. Apr 1801); The initial tentative id of Andrew as Stephen's father was based on the 1774 baptism in Bewcastle of a Stephen to an Andrew and Jane Routledge of Craggs actually being the same Andrew & Jane Graham of Craggs a year or so before. This baptism entry "mistake" of the wrong surname being reinforced by the will of Andrew's brother Grimston who refers to Steven as "son of my late brother Andrew" and absence of any evidence saying a Routledge couple of this name existed in the area at this time2,3,4
MotherJane Graham (say 1736 - aft. 1804); The tentative id of Jane as the mother of Stephen is based on the 1774 baptism in Bewcastle of a Stephen to an Andrew and Jane Routledge of Craggs actually being the same Andrew & Jane Graham of Craggs a year or so before2,3

BMDB data

According to the census of 1851 Stephen was born cir. 1774 Bewcastle, CUL, ENG, but when I checked the BTs for Bewcastle, then Nichol forest and Arthuret, for the period 1770 to 1779 I couldn't spot him. His death cert. corroborates this birth year.5,6
Stephen Graham married Jane Baty, daughter of William Baty and Sarah Baty (V2b2), on 13 Aug 1805 Arthuret, CUL, ENG, the brief entry for marriage #128 showing they were married by license by John James, curate, in presence of Thomas Bowman & John Beaty.7
Stephen Graham died on 25 Dec 1856 English St, Longtown, CUL, ENG; the cert showing him as aged 82, a road labourer, who died of old age, with no medical attendant. Informant was Mary Graham (assumed to be his dtr), X her mark, present at the death. Reg. 26th Dec.6 He was buried on 28 Dec 1856 at Arthuret, Cumberland.8,9
It would be wonderful to find someone else researching these Grahams. Current puzzles: Where was Stephen baptized? Who is the Edward with Stephen in 1841? Is he the David of the same age with him in 1851? Possibly an illegitimate son of Mary?
A breakthru has provided evidence of his father, 2 uncles and a cousin via an 1810 will of Grimston Graham of Fauld. It states that Stephen was his nephew via his late brother Andrew. Likewise a Fanny, wife of William Scaife, is a niece via Grimston's brother David. As for the missing baptism, the same kind soul who gave me the lead for the will, also posits that the 1774 Bewcastle baptism of a Stephen to an Andrew and Jane Routledge of Craggs is actually this Stephen with the Minister having written in the wrong surname, supporting evidence being that no other evidence of a couple of the name given in the records is obvious in the records, yet a few years before there was a son baptised to Andrew and Jane Graham of Craggs who died young and is buried at Arthuret. Which supports the theory with both Arthuret connections, and for a couple of the right surname actually being in the area. I like the idea, as does another Bewcastle expert who adds that the Routledge family had NO children called Stephen anywhere. Further research will ensue.
Late 2014 brought to light several intriguing atDNA matches to assorted GRAHAM families around Cumberland. Jury still out on all of them!10,2

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
