BMDB data

William Baty was born cir. 1742 ?Browside or ?Whiteclose, Par. of Arthuret, CUL, ENG, earliest child's baptism refers to Browside, age at burial gives year, at marriage he was living at Whiteclose. There are only 2 Arthuret baptisms on the IGI for a William around this time, one to a David in 1740 and one to a George in 1744, so either it's the wrong parish, the record hasn't been extracted for the IGI or I've got the parents wrong, but for now, having corrected my maths to get the birth year right from his age at death, I'll stick with my id by place connections. There aren't a lot of Baty wills available, but one I have on order is for a Whiteclose one.3,4,5,6
William Baty married Sarah Baty (V2b2) on 24 May 1778 Arthuret, CUL, ENG, William of Browside, Sarah of Stonehouse, bondsman John Iriving yeoman ?of Carl?5,7
William Baty remarried on 23 May 1795 at Arthuret, Cumberland, to Mary Simpson both of this parish, by license, the marriage bonds showing that William was a widower, yeoman of Hornickhill and Mary of Lairdstown, both Par. of Arthuret. Bondsman Thomas Little yeoman of Lairdstown (at least that's where I interpret the ditto to mean.)1,8
William Baty died cir. Nov 1810 Hornick Hill, nr Longtown, Par. of Arthuret, CUL, ENG.4 He was buried on 16 Nov 1810 at Arthuret, Cumberland, the burial entry showing him to be aged 68 and of Hornickhill.4
I have to admit that it is conjecture that this is the right father for my Jane, wife of Stephen Graham. Supporting "evidence" is that the dtr of a William & Sarah bap. in Arthuret in 1778 is the right age, and father William is at Hornick Hill, where Jane is described as being when illegitimate son Andrew was born. There is however at least one other William & Sarah around (a son bap. 1784 at Raughton Head), so the Browside bap. might not be the William & Sarah family of Hornick Hill. On balance, however, it does "feel" right, and Browside is next door to Hornick Hill and has other connections with Batys.2,9

Census/Where lived/Occupations

In May 1778 William Baty was living Browside, Par. of Arthuret, CUL, ENG, when he married Sarah, and when their first child was born (Browside being between Fauld and Hornick Hill according to a 1774 map.)5,9
Bet. 1780 - 1790 William and Sarah Baty (V2b2) were Hornick Hill, nr Longtown, Par. of Arthuret, CUL, ENG, William being described variously as a husbandman and a farmer as their children were baptised.3

All the other info

William Baty was mentioned in the death notice of Mary Simpson on 2 Jan 1842 Rickergate, Carlisle, CUL, ENG; "At the house of her son in Rickergate, on the 2nd inst., after a long and painful illness, Mrs Mary Baty, widow of the late William Baty of Hornick Hill in the Parish of Arthuret, in her 79th year, much respected."10

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
