General information on the Parish of Bickleigh
Hele or Hele Barton is a place that has had extensive and prolonged connections with the extended King and Rowe families. I've not yet teased out all the connections, nor done a timeline of who moved there when, the following is merely a sample:
1780s-1790s it is possible that Joseph Rowe and Elizabeth Cross were there, but I've to recheck my notes.
1790s Grace King later Creber and Spurr, dtr of Walter King yeoman, & mother of the Sarah Creber who married Henry Dawe (son of Henry Dawe and Mary King, dtr of James Barter King) was supposedly born there.
1820 John Rowe, son of Joseph Rowe and Elizabeth Cross died at Hele (John being the brother of Matthias).
1822-1832 children of Matthias Rowe and Ann King born at Hele.
1841 ?
1851 (assuming Heal is Hele) held by the family of Lawson Mason, farming 270 acres with the help of 3 labourers, no obvious King or Rowe connection.
1861 Hele Barton farmed by the family of John & Edith Pratt, at which census the family of John and Thirza King were farming at Lower Upperton.
1871 Hele Barton was 343 acres and Samuel Trounce employed 5 men and 6 girls and boys, no obvious King or Rowe connection.
Sometime between 1872 and 1881 Walter & Margaret King moved from Dittsham Lower, Walkhampton to Hele.
1881 and 1891 held by Walter and Margaret King (moved from Walkhampton).
By the 1901 census their son-in-law Tom Eggins was the farmer at Hele and Walter's brother John was living in Hele Barton Cottage.
