St, Dundas, Wentworth Co, ONT, CAN, at age 72; cert shows: Joseph King Rowe, aged 73 of 290 ?King St?, b ENG 1857?, s/o Joseph Rowe b ENG, name/birthplace of mother not given, inf. son C Rowe of Dundas; buried Dundas Nov 23rd 1924, died of myocarditis, 2mths attended by Dr M? E Inksetter from 16th Oct to 21st Nov.1 He was buried with Sarah Elizabeth Rowe in Grove Cem., West Flamborough, Wentworth Cty, ONT, CAN, at the same ref number (which may or may not mean they're all connected): Joseph K, Sarah E (McMann), Charles Gerald, Martha (Jacques), Amelia, Marjorie Madelyn, William, and on a slightly different ref. Margaret.16
The census of 1861 showed William, Joseph and David in the household of their parents Joseph and Thirza Rowe in Albany Pl, Heavitree Rd, Exeter, Par. of St Sidwell, DEV, ENG, enumerated as ROWE: Joseph King 38 farmer and grocer b Bickleigh, DEV; wife Thirza, 36 conductor of grocery store b Tavistock; Children: William Mathias 10 scholar b St Budeaux; Joseph 8, Hannah Trimble 7 both scholars b Exeter; Elizabeth 4, Sarah Jane 2, David 1mth, all b Exeter; Uncle: William 70 superannuated shipwright b Bickleigh; Mother-in-law Betsey 69 landowner's wife b Beerhalton (sic); and two servants: Tucker and Wilson.17,18
The census of 6 Apr 1871 showed Joseph, David and Matthew and their sisters Hannah, Elizabeth, Jane and Annie in the household of their mother Thirza in Heavitree Rd, St Sidwell, Exeter, DEV, ENG, enumerated as ROWE: Thirza, head, 46 widow, retired grocer b Tavistock; Children (all b Exeter): Joseph 18 joiner; Hannah 17 drapers apprentice; Elizth 14 milliner apprentice; Jane 12 scholar; David 11 scholar; Annie 8 scholar; Matthew 6 scholar; Servant: Eliza Hereford, 20 b Exeter.19
According to the census of 1911 Joseph Rowe immigrated to CAN in 1871 which date has to be later than April as he appeared on the English census with his mother at the start of that month. There is a Joseph Rowe listed as an 18 yr old steerage passenger on the "City of Brooklyn" which left Liverpool and arrived New York 10 May 1871. The passenger listed immediately prior to Joseph is a 22 yr old William Gale, who may or may not be related.20,21,9,10
The census of 1880 showed Joseph with his wife Ellen, their dtrs Margaret and Thursey, their son Joseph at 55 Maryland St, Buffalo, Erie Cty, NY, USA, household enumerated as ROWE: Joseph 28, carpenter, b ENG as were both parents; wife Ellen, 29, b Canada, parents both b Ireland; Children (all b Canada marked as at home and can't read or write!): Joseph, 5, Margaret, 3, Thursey, 8mths (b Nov) (their soujourn in the States can't have been longer than from Oct 1879 to Feb 1883 as children were born in Dundas, Ontario in those months).22,10

Joseph Rowe was the informant for the death of his child Thirza Rowe on 1 Mar 1883 at Dundas, Wentworth Co, ONT, CAN.24 Joseph Rowe witnessed the New Tag of Ann Rowe and Honor Rowe on 8 Feb 1888 from 1 Higher Belmont Rd, Exeter, DEV, ENG; Dear Aunt (assumed to be Honour Rowe nee Dawe in NZ). Letter mentions: "a sad Christmas with us losing my dear sister under such painful circumstances" (identified as Hannah Trimble Couch nee Rowe, presumed to have died in childbirth); "now to be the last left of four daughters"; ..Mother ..does have good health & spirits & Mr Lamacraft is very good indeed"; (mother) has brought us all up to good trades"; Aunt Sarah (identified as Sarah Davey nee Rowe) "only lives about 3 minutes walk from us now so we see a good bit of her"; "I am sorry Elizabeth does not get better" (Honour's dtr with epilepsy); Uncle Isaac losing "so much money"; "Aunt Bennett (Honors sister Betsy) is staying with us"... "her youngest daughter Grace .. a great caution"; "My Eldest brother William ..doing well in his mills about 18 miles from here.. has a good wife.."; "My second brother in America (assumed to be Joseph) has married again & got a little family about him & has to work hard."; My two other brothers are in business houses in London unmarried"; Honour had obviously told her niece Annie of her life in NZ as Annie's letter responds: "What long days of work yours must be I am thinking no one in this country works so hard as you do & when things are sold at such low prices it seems very hard, I hope times will soon be better."15
David, William, Joseph, Ann and Sarah were beneficiaries in the 25 Sep 1891 will of their mother Thirza Lamacraft at Belmont Rd, Exeter, DEV, ENG.25
Joseph Rowe appeared on the census of 1901 at Dundas, Wentworth Co, ONT, CAN, with Elizabeth Rowe, enumerated as ROWE: Joseph 48 carpenter born England 8 Jun 1852; wife Elizabeth 46 b Ontario14 Jun 1853 of Irish extraction; Children (all b ONT): Dtr Margaret 21 b 6 Jun 1879 (can't read occuptn); Son William G 15 b 15 Aug 1885 (?? boy); Son Charles 13 b 30 Oct 1887; Dtr Gladys 9 b 8 Aug 1891.26
The census of 1911 showed Joseph with his wife Sarah, their dtr Gladys in King St, Dundas, Wentworth Co, ONT, ENG, household enumerated as ROWE: Joe 59 b ENG Jun 1852, emig 1871 English origin, Canadian nationality, Anglican, carpenter; wife Elizabeth 52 b ONT Jun 1859, Irish origin, Canadian, Anglican; Dtr Gladys 9 b ONT Aug 1892 (i've not yet found the remaining children, other than Charles).20
