John Bain1,2

(circa July 1811 - 1 March 1890)
FatherJohn Bain (R-BY2937)1 (cir. 1784 - Jun 1853)
MotherCatherine Gray (cir. Sep 1785 - Jan 1865); I have assumed that the John Bain, chr 1811 Latheron, son of John Bain and Catherine Gray, is the one married to Elizabeth Clyne, even though the latter John's dth cert does not give a mother's name.3
Relationship4th great-uncle of Lorna Henderson

BMDB data

John Bain was born cir. Jul 1811 Clashscribie, Par. of Latheron, CAI, SCT.1 He was baptized on 4 Jul 1811 Par. of Latheron, CAI, SCT; entry reads: 1811 Jul 4th John Bain in Clashcribie had a child baptised named John (father John must have been home on leave at some stage!)1 Some sources believe John Bain was born cir. 1813.4 Other sources indicate John Bain was born cir. 1815 Halkirk, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, SCT.5 Yet other sources indicate John Bain was born cir. 1818 Latheron, CAI, SCT.2
John Bain married Elizabeth Clyne, daughter of William Clyne and Elizabeth Gheal?, on 16 Sep 1840 Bower, CAI, SCT.6
John Bain died on 1 Mar 1890 Westerdale, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, SCT; the cert showing he was aged 77, at Westerdale, son of John Bain (crofter), no mother stated, with the inf. being his son-in-law George Mackay of Skinnet.4
The identification of this John Bain as the son of John Bain and Catherine Gray, chr 1811 Latheron, is based on circumstantial evidence. The one married to Elizabeth Clyne was given as the son of a crofter, John, on his dth cert, but he himself was very unsure of both his age and birthplace, varying between 1813 and 1818, Latheron and Halkirk. I have made the link because he married in Bower in 1840, and therefore could be why brother Donald was in Bower when he himself married, and could be the witness to the baptism of my 2 greats, Donald's son, John Bain, in 1832. And also because of the family plot in Old Hall cemetery at Dunn which contains not only John's wife Elzabeth Clyne, and son Donald, but also Thomas Bain and Margaret Henderson, John's nephew.3

Census/Where lived/Occupations

He was living Clayock, Par. of Bower, CAI, SCT, in Nov 1832 (this assumes he is correctly identified as the witness to nephew's baptism, once thought to be highly speculative, but given the burials in a family plot at Dunn Old Hall of wife Elizabeth, son Donald, and cousin Thomas...)7 John Bain and Elizabeth Clyne were not found in the census of 1841 Par. of Bower, CAI, SCT, where were they? Can't definitively find John or Elizabeth, or dtr Elizabeth, or Elizabeth's son Alexander FRASER or CLYNE in Caithness as yet, not immediately obviously further afield.8
John and Elizabeth Bain appeared on the census of 1851 Achalone, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, SCT, as Robert advised: John 33 b Latheron; Elizabeth 46, (?b Halkirk?); Dtr Elizabeth, sons Donald and John, all b Halkirk and possibly Alexander Fraser or Clyne, Elizabeth's son, aged 24
Ancestry adds: BAIN: John 35 farm serv b Latheron; wife Elizabeth 46 b Halkirk; Children: Elizabeth 11, John 9, both scholars, Donald 6, all b Halkirk; Stepson: Alexr FRASER 24 b Halkirk.9,10
The census of 1861 showed John with his wife Elizabeth Upper Westerdale, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, SCT, household enumerated as BAIN: John, 46, ploughman b. Latheron; Elizabeth, 60, ploughman's wife b. Halkirk.5,11
John Bain was shown as the head of the household in the census of 1871 Upper Westerdale, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, with Elizabeth enumerated as BAIN: John 55 ag lab b Latheron; wife Elizabeth 65 b Halkirk; Son Donald 25 ag lab b Watten; Grdson: John Mcray (MacKAY assumed) 8 b Halkirk.12 By 1874 John Bain was a farm servant Westerdale, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, SCT.6 He was a farmer, when son Donald married in Dec 1878.13
John Bain appeared on the census of 3 Apr 1881 at Westerdale, Par. of Halkirk, CAI, as father of Donald Bain.2

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
