BMDB data

William Purdie was born on 13 Jan 1823 Pavilion, Par. of Melrose, ROX, SCT,3,4 and baptized there on 10 Mar 1823 Entry reads: William lawful son of Charles Purdie, Pavilion and Margt Fairbairn was born 13th Jany 1823 & baptd 10 March 1823 (followed immediately by birth/bap of Archibald 1827 and others in 1826 and 1825.)3,5 Some sources show William as born cir. 1825 (from his death/burial record in Melrose, but a subsequent finding of his baptism shows it should have said aged 25.)1,3
William Purdie died on 15 Feb 1848 Pavilion, Par. of Melrose, ROX, SCT, at age 25.2
Until I found the 1848 death and burial entries for Margaret and her 23 yr old son William I only knew about an 1845/6ish William in the family.
This 1848 death post-dates the birth of the younger William, and is rather too late in documented mother Margaret's life (she would have been 56!)
So, was the younger William simply known as William in honour of his older brother?
Or does William belong to his "sister" Mary instead?6,7

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
