Richard Matters was born cir. 1757 ?Bere Ferrers, Par. of Bere Ferrers, DEV, ENG, but if so, it wasn't in the regular church, as I couldn't spot any Metters/Matters baptisms at all in the registers of the Bere Ferrers church 1751 thru 1763.^3,4

Richard Matters and Richard Metters Werrington, DEV, ENG

, in 1757 are possibly the same person. Given Richard and Patience named their first born son William. Werrington isn't far from the Tamar, so a waterman may well have travelled to and from Werrington/Bere Ferrers (not that I know whether or not it was navigable.)^7,8
Richard Matters and Mary Metters were possibly related It has been suggested that Richard's dtr Mary is the Mary who married Nathaniel Hawke. This latter Mary, although married in Walkhampton, was baptized Virginstow, Cornwall to Richard and Joanna, with census and burial evidence for her to confirm the id. This Richard's dtr Mary is more likely the one who married Thomas Courtis Metters aka Thomas Courtis.^9,10,11
