James Sinton1

(circa 1746 - June 1835)

BMDB data

James Sinton was born cir. 1746 ?BEW or ?MLN, SCT, not immediately obvious SctP or FamSearch.2 Some sources show James as born cir. 1760 Ashkirk, ROX, SCT, now believed to be incorrect, given the Edinburgh burial of the 89 yr old mason whose address ties up with son James 1791 - 1829, along with those of the other children also popping up in Edinburgh, with at least one confirmed as born Duns.3,1,4
James Sinton married Jean Trotter say 1782 date assumed from age of eldest known child, not immediately obvious SctP.
James Sinton died in Jun 1835 11 St Leonards Lane, Edinburgh, MLN, SCT.5,6,7 He was buried on 4 Jun 1835 Sth Leith, MLN, SCT, entry shows James as mason of 11 St Leonard Lane, 89, d. of decay of nature, buried new ground 63 ft N from W division of Mr George Sandilands tomb.2
A 2000 tree shows the Thomas married to Agnes WAIT & Lily WIGHT as born c 1791, the son of James SINTON & Jean TROTTER. The children of this latter couple were all recorded in the Dunse OPR in a page dated 1807 but with the births and baptisms dated from 1784 to 1797, a Thomas not included.
Given Thomas ended up in London it seems more likely that he is the 1785 baptism of Thomas to Thomas SINTON & Elizabeth CURRY at Lauder, whose other children also ended up in London. This would also make the marriage of George and Priscialla SINTON a cousin/cousin marriage.
Additional evidence for the prosecution is that IF his birth year (abt 1791) is accurate, he wouldn't fit in the family of James & Jean as there isn't really a sufficient gap between Peter & James.8,4
Original information received on James Snr's forebears was that he belonged to the family of William & Isabel (DUNLOP) SINTON and thus was born c 1760 at Ashkirk.
However this family, that of James & Jean (TROTTER) SINTON, seem to have moved from Duns, concentrated in Edinburgh following trades of mason, cabinetmaker, slater.
There are two deaths of James SINTON mason in Edinburgh: one in 1829 aged 37, from 72 Richmond St, another in 1835 aged 89 of St Leonard's Lane.
The conclusion is that these are son and father respectively, with the son James being the husband of Helen TELFER, and of an age to be the 1791 birth to James & Jean (TROTTER) SINTON at Duns.9,4

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
