     James Shiel was born say 1690 ?Houstoun, Par. of Jedburgh, ROX, SCT.5,2,6
     James Shiel married Isabel Shiel on 1 Apr 1715 at Jedburgh, ROX, SCT, entry reads: "Aprile 1st 1715 James Shiel smith in Houston and Isabel Shiel in Swinnie were maried."5,7
     
     I would have expected son Robert to be higher in the pecking order than 4th son, given that James, smith of Houstoun/Ulston is clearly the son of a Robert. So much for the generally faithfully followed Scottish naming pattern. There are no Rob* to James Sh*i*l births on Sct People in Roxburgh but there are 10 in total in the OPR period, one of which fitted in a birth/baptism gap between Janet and Agnes. There's nothing to positively identify James as our James however. Does anyone know anything about a James & Robert Shiell of Hardens in Greenlaw?8,9
     James Shiel was a smith fr 1715 - 1738 at Houstoun (aka Ulston or Uston), Par. of Jedburgh, ROX, SCT, this occupation and place being given on his marriage entry (1715), baptism of dtrs Margaret (1723) and Isobell (1729) and sons Robert (1736), James (1738), by which latter it was being spelt Ulston rather than Houston or Houstoun.6,2,3,1,10
     James Shiel and Thomas Shiel at Jedburgh, ROX, SCT, in 1716 were possibly related although it's probably a long shot, one a smith in Houstoun, Jedburgh, the other a weaver in Jedburgh.8
     James Shiel and Robert Shiell at Greenlaw, BEW, SCT, on 20 Apr 1718 were possibly related possibly as father & son, given James is highly likely to have had a first son named Robert, and there isn't one obvious on the Jedburgh OPRs.8 James Shiel witnessed the baptism of Margaret Christie on 13 Aug 1720 at Jedburgh, ROX, SCT; entry reads: William Crystie tennant in Houston had a Daughter born the 9th instant and baptized this day called Margret James Sheil smith in Houston and George Waddell glover in Jedbr witnesses (the 3 of them were the parties in the baptism the same day of Jame's dtr Agnus).11
     On 4 Oct 1738 at Jedburgh, ROX, SCT, James Shiel was hanging around at the Kirk after baptism of his own son James, and is recorded as a witness to the baptism of Isobel, dtr of James Jerdan Senior Tobacconist.12
     As of 1715, his surname was also spelt James Shiell but the spelling sometimes varied within the one document.5
