Lake, Par. of Kirkandrews upon Esk, CUL, ENG

Some notes on the parish of Kirkandrews upon Esk. This includes an account of the "irruption of the Solway Moss" when the area was inundated by "a thick black fluid" with houses and fields buried in a stagnant lake which increased in size for several weeks but was eventually drained and restored at a very reasonable cost in money and time (a few days and £20*). So, not a place to be living in Nov 1771, nor in 1542 when Scotland fought England (yet again) there but the Scots no doubt don't want to remember that one.
The attached 1774 Longtown map was taken from The Williamson Diaries - Part I, editted by Ted Relph with places of interest either underlined or circled in red. Lake is just above Longtown to the right of the Solway Moss
* the summary is however a little misleading when compared to the Gilpin account to be found in a google book search using the keywords "Gilpin netherby" as the few days and £20 actually related to the removal of a knoll at Netherby rather than the drainage and reconstruction of the farm land
