BMDB data

George McAdie was born cir. Feb 1791 North Dun(n), Par. of Watten, CAI, SCT.4 He was baptized on 16 Feb 1791 Watten, CAI, SCT; entry (MacAdie in margin) reads: John McAdie & Jean Brims in North Dun had a son baptized called George, before witnesses Alexander Levach & James Brims both in Northdun.4,5 He and Janet Bain were assumed not to be married.6
George McAdie married Catherine Sinclair on 28 Feb 1827 Watten, CAI, entry reads: Wattin 28 Feb 1827 George McAdie in Toftingal and Catherine Sinclair there, both of this parish were married on this day before the Monthly prayer meeting of Watten.1,7,3
George McAdie was assumed to have died bef. 1841 ?Watten, CAI, SCT, Deceased when Jane married iin 1856.
Neither he, nor wife Catherine are immeditately obvious in the 1841 census by which time children were living with relatives:
Jane with her mother's brother David Sinclair in Clyth
Eliizabeth (yet to be found)
George with his uncle James McAdie, shoemaker in Wick.8
George married to Catherine Sinclair is linked to the 1791 baptism to parents John Mcdie and Jane Brims because
- it fits the likely age of wife Catherine better than his being an undocumented son of George McAdie and Elizabeth/Betty Henderson which has been suggested because they were living in Toftingal where George was by the time he married
- his son George is described as cousin of a James McAdie in Wick in the 1871 census. George is shown with this familiy in all earlier censuses, James being the son of James, shoemaker, a brother of the 1791 George under this suggested scenario
George and Elizabeth (Henderson) McAdie had also been suggested because George's marriage to Catherine described him as George Jnr, as did the baptisms of two of his children.
Jnr can be used to differentiate father & son, but it can also be assigned to differentiate between older and younger namesakes in a locality. Which latter they certainly were.
However George Snr died in 1865 by which time George Jnr had been twice described as deceased in certificates.8

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
