BMDB data

James Turnbull was born cir. Aug 1764 Dykehead, Par. of Kirkandrews on Esk, CUL, ENG.1,2 He was baptized on 2 Sep 1764 Canonbie, DFS, SCT; to Walter TURNBULL and his wife, in Dykehead.2
James Turnbul married Agnes Elliot on 30 Apr 1801 Canonbie, DFS, entry reads: Jas Turnbul, Kirk Andrews, & Agness Elliot Crookholm.1,4
James Turnbull died bet. 1841 - 1851 ?Crossings, Trough Twp, Par. of Stapleton, CUL, ENG; several options in dth index (all Cumberland): Longtown (1842 and 1846), Carlisle (1843 and 1847). If anyone can claim any of these four as A. N. Other James that would help!
     James' time had obviously "arrived".
Within the space of slightly more than a month, the following happened, in order:
- TMG conference cruise: met Chaye who was investigating her brick wall of an Elizabeth Turnbull, one of the candidates being Elizabeth dtr of James and Agnes (Elliot) Turnbull of Dykehead (actually shown as Dykehead, Kirkandrews on Esk, Canonbie, Dumfries) - filed the info away as worthy of investigation as to extremely likely connection to my Robert Turnbull of Dykehead
- a couple of weeks later, probably prompted by the above, posted some of the memories of my visit to Dykehead in 1994 "some more of those Americans dear", on my GenBlog, place anonymous
- decided to find out which of the many James Turnbulls it was that had married in Longtown in 1844, so ordered the cert.
- within a day of that, and a week of the anonymous blog publication, contacted by Robin saying he'd found my Robert of Dykehead on the web and was very interested as he was a descendant of a James & Agnes (Elliot) Turnbull of Dykehead
- "outed" Dykehead as the anonymous place referred to in the GenBlog entry a few days earlier, documenting this new contact
- following day contacted by a distant cousin pointing out that he had sold Dykehead in the early 1990s (we determined that it was probably shortly before my visit)
- a day or so of concentrated effort researching Canonbie baptisms determining a couple of generations further back on my Turnbulls
- marr. certificate of James Turnbull arrives, confirming suspicion that he was the one who had married a Margaret Jackson, but also providing the unexpected bonus of now being able to place him within "my" Turnbull families as his father was James, farmer. This info, when coupled with research from 2005 which showed his birthplace as Dykehead, 1807, made him the son of James and Agnes (Elliot) Turnbull, whom I didn't even know existed back in 2005 when I first found the younger James.3

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
