John Dawe married Elizabeth Rundell on 14 Jan 1801 North Tamerton, DEV, ENG, not obvious in Sampford Spiney or Meavy cd index, assumed to be the John DAW/Elizabeth RUNDELL marr. at Nth Tamerton, given the Tamerton/Sampford/Meavy connections for John and family, but other options do exist.^2,1,4,5
John Dawe died on 25 Apr 1856 Birdcage Farm, Tamerton Foliott, Dist of Plympton St Mary, DEV, ENG; "DIED. On the 25th April, at Birdcage Farm, near Plymouth, Mr. John Dawe, farmer, aged 78 years, lately of Maristow Barton, and father of Mr. Sampson Dawe, of Willunga, in this colony."^1,6

The suspected relationship between the two contemporary DAWE families, John & Elizabeth (RUNDELL), Sampson & Jenny (MADDOCK), with Meavy, Tamerton Foliott and Willunga, Sth Australian connections has been proven in that the will of Betty DAWE nee SCOBEL explicitly mentions her son John of Maristow Barton in the parish of Tamerton Foliott - which John's death notice in the Australian paper also mentions.^3,6

John Dawe appeared on the census of 1841 Morristown Farm, Par. of Tamerton Foliott, Dist Plympton St Mary, DEV, ENG, as DAWE: John 60 farmer; Assumed children: Eleanor 30, Mary 25, ?Grdchild?: Elizabeth 3; ?Son?: Henry 20, ?Grdson? John 12; All b Cty; Also James WILLCOCKS 25 ag lab; John BICKLE 12 ag lab; Elizabeth BRYANT 12 F.S. (NB enumerators were instructed to round ages down to the nearest multiple of 5.)⁷ He appeared on the census of 1851 at Birdcage Farm, Tamerton Foliott, Dist of Plympton St Mary, DEV, ENG, in the household of Willam Dawe Spurrell and Eleanor Spurrell as father-in-law of Willam Dawe Spurrell.¹

Wills/bequests

The will of Betty Dawe (registered Tamerton Foliott, DEV, ENG, on 28 Oct 1843) mentioned John Dawe. The executors & trustees named were siblings an unknown person .⁸
John Dawe wrote a will on 18 Nov 1854 John DAWE of Birdcage farm in the parish of Tamerton ffoliott .. unto my daughter Priscilla DAWE the sum of fifty pounds and to my son Sampson DAWE the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid to them within twelve months after my decease I give and bequeath unto my son William DAWE my ?? and all my ?? and wearing apparell I give and bequeath unto my grandson Henry DAWE son of my late son Henry DAWE the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid to him on his attaining the age of twenty one years and ?? it that the said sum of one hundred pounds shall be deposited in some savings bank or invested in government stock in the names of my executors in trust ... (but if he died before 21 leaving no heirs) the said £100 to my said son Sampson DAWE and Elizabeth DAWE the mother of my said grandson in equal share and proportions And all the rest and residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects whatsoever I .. unto and amongst my sons William and John and my daughters Elizabeth HACKER, Tabitha BROWN, Mary HELSON, and Eleanor SPURRELL in equal shares and proportions ... (for their own benefit etc...) and also nominate Robert ?.. bridge? of Jump in the Parish of Bickleigh .. and Joseph SPURRELL of ?Derriford? in the parish of Egg Buckland in the said county yeoman joint executors .. Witnessed Joseph DAWE of Henwell, Tamerton Foliott, Elizabeth DAWE, wife of Joseph DAWE
