     Rachel Sinton appeared on the census of 1851 Lindean Cottage, Galashiels, Par. of Melrose, ROX, SCT, with James Scott, enumerated as James SCOTT, head, mar, 30, blacksmith emp 2 men, b Selkirk, SEL, wife Rachael SINTON, 32, b Bowden, SEL (sic). Dtr Margaret SINTON, 4 b Kelso, ROX; Son, James SINTON, 2; dtr Elisabeth SINTON, 1m both b Galashiels, ROX. Apprentice blacksmiths: William HARVEY, 18, b Wilton, ROX and John SMITH, 15, b Selkirk, SEL.
NB surname of children given as "ditto" underneath Rachael SINTONs surname, rather than as explicitly SCOTT or SINTON.4

     The census of 1881 showed Rachel with her husband James, their dtrs Margaret and Jane Lindean Smithy, Galashiels, SEL, SCT, household enumerated as James SCOTT, 60, master blacksmith emp 1 man, b Howden, SEL, wife Rachel SCOTT, 62, b Bowden, ROX. Children: Margaret SCOTT, 33, assistant housekeeper, unm; Jane SCOTT, 21, dressmaker, both b Galashiels, ROX. Visitor: Agnes TURNBULL, 15, b West Bing, Linlithgow, SCT, finished education (wife's grddtr from 1st marriage, place actually West Binnie.)12
     Rachel Scott appeared on the census of 1891 in the Blacksmith's cottage, Lindean, Par. of Galashiels, SEL, SCT, with James Scott, enumerated as SCOTT: James 70 blacksmith b Selkirk, SEL; wife Rachell, 71 b Bowden, ROX; Dtr Margaret 43 b Kelso, ROX.13

Names

     Rachel Sinton was also known as Rachel Linton I've assumed this is a misreading of SINTON given the 1851 census clearly has SINTON, and the igi has the marriage indexed as SINTON.14

     Rachel Sinton outlived her husband James Scott who died on 27 Nov 1893 when she was 74.17
