     William McEwan was born cir. Aug 1736 Broomrigs, Par. of St Ninians, STI, SCT.1 He was baptized on 27 Aug 1736 Par. of St Ninians, STI, SCT; entry shows William as son of William McEwan and Margt GRAY, Broomrigs, before Congregation.1
     William McEwan married Janet Ferguson say 1760 ?Kincardine, PER, SCT.
     The William having children with Janet Ferguson is assumed by naming pattern of their children, to be the son of Wiliam McEWAN and Margaret GRAY baptized in 1736 at St Ninians.
Adding to this ID were investigations into a set of DNA matches which led back to this family and a review of the family of William & Margaret (GRAY) McEWAN.

The May 2017 Ancestry DNA match that brought this family to my attention couldn't be analysed further as Ancestry, unlike all the other main genetic genealogy DNA testing companies, does not provide segment data (chromosome browser).
May 2018 saw another match from the same extended family join the merry group of matches, and has uploaded to GEDmatch where further analysis is possible.
We now have a fully triangulated match sharing a segment of DNA on chromsome 7 between several descendants of Archibald HENDERSON & Margaret McEWAN, and at least one descendant of William McEWAN and Janet FERGUSON.
It's not a huge match, some share abt 12cMs, one 17cMs, and we may never prove that the bits of DNA definitely come from those branches of our respective ancestors, but it is a good hint of a connection.
Apr 2020 updaite: another, slightly larger match (19cMs to a descendant of another line down Alexander) has now been added into the mix.2
