Elizabeth McKay1
ID#56512, (8 Mar 1872 - 10 May 1966)
- WebNoteOriginals*: Livy would love to identify this woman. Always "Aunt Liz" to the family, and obviously had close ties to them, but relationship unknown, if any. The 1924 letter from Hannah to Will Kerr after the death of Johanna (Hannah's sister, Will's mother) certainly implies her family came from Caithness.2
- Birth: Elizabeth McKay was born in Mar 1871 in SCT.3
- Birth*: Elizabeth McKay was born on 8 Mar 1872 in SCT.4,5
- Marriage*: Elizabeth McKay married John McKay, son of John McKay and Elizabeth UnknownSurname, cir. 1897 ?Elizabeth, Union Co, NJ, USA, 1930 census implied 1893, from age at marriage, but given birth dates vary so much, rather hard to tell. I'll go with the 1910 census married 12 yrs for now and 1900 marr. 3 yrs.6,5,7,3
- LetterFull: Elizabeth McKay was mentioned in the letter Hannah Bain sent to William Thomas Kerr on 1 Apr 1924 from 24 High St, Wick, CAI, SCT; having been informed by him of his mother/her sister, Joanna's dth. Hannah says she last heard from her sister at New Year, and had she told her about Will's wife and children, refers to the sudden death "the dear lady" she was with for so long (I assume she was a companion/housekeeper or some such?);
Hannah says she was some years younger than Johanna and doesn't remember her at all, as she had left (for America) so young.
"Aunt Kate", had kept Hannah updated about the family. Although Johanna had never returned to Scotland, Alexander, Will's father had been in Edinburgh at some stage where Hannah had met hem "many years since".
She had obviously moved from Edinburgh back to Wick: "caithness is verry cold poor country".. "we dont have much of a summer here Wick is verry dirty town ben a fishing place".
"tell Mrs McKay I was asking for hir does she ever come home to see her friend nan"
"Jan" was going to be called and Will had said she would help if Hannah needed anything. More than one sister was obviously still iving in Scotland as "my sisters all sends their kind sympathy"... signed Hannah Bain.8

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
