  • LetterFull*: The full text of the letter Catherine Sutherland Richardson sent to Bessie White on 19 Feb 1961 from 230 Macandrew St, Dunedin, OTG, NZ, reads: Dear Bessie,
    I received your letter & I am sorry I could not answer it sooner & the very day I got it. I took a very bad heart turn & I have been in bed ever since, however I am glad Bertha & Grace have gone for that trip & I hope it won't be too strenuous for Bertha as she does not keep very well.
    I think Grace will be on the ball when she arrives in England. I suppose she has got leave from her work I had two friends went on the same boat, they are away for two years to you see some people are a bit lucky.
    This snuff box I have here belonged to Chubb & Dad's father was about seventy when he hand it on to him.
    Evidently it was a society or something about the Richardson's & when it was broken up all members got a token when Dads father got it was 1848 & he said it was hundreds of years old then & I know we have had it for over sixty years but it was a pity we should have had the date put on. The letter that Dads father sent is still inside but hard to read & there was no date on it, I suppose you have seen it here. Chubb was very proud of it & would not let it out of the house. Mum always kept it wrapped in a towel in the drawer in his room but I don't know who will get it next as there is no James in our family so far but one never knows.
    Around the lid here is the inscription.
    "Incoproration of Hammermen of Eastern & Western Portsburgh Edinburgh"
    & there is a silver shield With (James Richardson) engraved on it & the date
    1848 when Dad's father received it & a few chains hanging on it also with a rake, shovel, poker, & a brush I don't know what they mean.

         In a separate plot in the same cemetery (I've no idea how close) are two more sons and their wives (Charles Edward and Frances May nee Davidson and Robert Ernest and Harriet nee Sinclair) At least I am assuming they are sons, as Robert Ernest shows up on the WWI reserves living at the same Forth St address as Thomas Reginald and he wouldn't be buried in the same plot as a complete stranger with the same surname would he? Their birth dates and places "fit". All of which theory is confirmed in AWA's army record.6,3
