- LetterFull*: The full text of the letter Jamie Sutherland sent to Sandie Sutherland on 9 Nov 1947 from Mertoun Schoolhouse, St Boswells, ROX, SCT, reads: Dear Sandy,
It is with deep sorrow that I write to inform you that mother died 31st October. She had been ill for about three weeks with prolapsus of the bowels before the end and suffered a great deal, but during the last week she was more at ease, and slipt peacefully away at four o'clock in the morning. Babs and Martha were with her at the last, and all her sons in Scotland** managed to get to Broadlean to pay their last respects to our beloved mother, who now rests at peace beside father.
Mother left some money, about £600, and by her will directed that each of her children should receive an equal share. As it was only because father and mother lived so long with Hughie and I made them a regular allowance that mother was able to leave so much, Babs, Johnie, Mattie, Tod, and I decided to return our shares to Hughie, while he undertook to have a stone erected on the grave. As one of her executors, I shall be pleased to have your instructions as to the disposal of your share, and we were strongly of the opinion, and personally I urge you to accept that opinion, that as you have had such an unfortunate time of it in Australia you should take it. Should you decide to do so - you are legally entitled to your share. I was instructed to ask you if you would be willing to pay your share of the cost of that memorial. As I wish mother's affairs settled as soon as possible, kindly reply without delay.
With kindest regards, I am, Your affectionate brother,
Jamie
** assumed to be Hugh, John, Matthew, Robert (Tod) and James, although at least one of those may have been in England (John).
A second letter, same date:
Dear Sandy,
Some time ago mother gave fifty pounds (£50) to Hughie to send to you, but he was not sure if he was allowed to send money out of the country or not, and he did not know how it could be sent, so he handed it to me to deal with. I am sending it through my own bank, the British ?? Bank, Newtown St Boswells and you will be paid through some bank in Melbourne. It will be Saturday before I can arrange to get to the bank and of course you will let me know when you get the money. Keep this letter, as the Australian Bank may want you to produce it as evidence of identity.
I am, Your affectionate brother, Jamie.3

E. & O. E. Some/most parish records are rather hard to read and names, places hard to interpret, particularly if you are unfamiliar with an area.
